DENTAL WAX-TYPES,INLAY WAX IN DETAIL NOTES

 DENTAL WAXES

  • Low molecular weight ester of fatty acids derived from natural or synthetic components such as petroleum derivatives that soften to a plastic state at relatively low temperature

  • Wax has been a valuable commodity for over 2000 years

  • Carnauba wax:hardest,more durable

CLASSIFICATION OF WAXES:

1)ACCORDING TO ORIGIN:

NATURAL :

MINERAL :Paraffin,ceresin

Carnauba,candelilla

PLANT;Carnauba,candelilla

INSECT:Beeswax

ANIMAL:Spermaceti wax

SYNTHETIC WAX

  • Acra wax
  • Aldo wax

2)ACCORDING TO USE AND APPLICATION:

A)PATTERN WAXES

Inlay wax

Casting wax

Base plate wax

B)PROCESSING WAX:

Boxing wax

utility wax

Sticky wax

C)IMPRESSION WAX

Bite registration or corrective wax

BOXING WAX

  • Mode of supply : sheets
  • Uses:controls the thickness of the border ,preserves the extension

UTILITY WAX:

  • Composition:beeswax,petrolatum
  • Mode of supply :sticks and sheets
  • Properties:soft at room temperature
  • Uses:to build up border of impression tray attaching a pontic of a bridge

STICKY WAX

  • Composition:yellow beeswax,rosin,gum dammar
  • Properties:hard,brittle,difficult to burn out

USES:

  • To hold the broken part of gypsum cast
  • To hold the metallic parts temporarily during soldering

INLAY WAX
  • Special form of waxes used for direct, indirect wax pattern that mimics final preparation
  • Fabricated on cast/lab -indirect
  • Fabricated directly on tooth its direct
  • ADA specification no:4
  • Available in pellets,ropes,sticks
  • Colours:BLUE GREEN,IVORY,DEEP PURPLE
TYPES:
  • TYPE 1:Direct,medium consistency
  • TYPE 2:indirect,soft consistency

COMPOSITION:
  • Base -paraffin(60%)
  • Modifier -carnauba -25%
  • Ceresin-10%
  • Beeswax-5%
  • gum dammar-1%
  • colouring agent-<1%

  • Modifiers are added as paraffin has low strength ,properties to flakiness, highest coefficient of thermal expansion -greater distortion

  • carnauba ,gum damar:increases hardness, decreased flow ,improves smooth surface glossiness

PROPERTIES:

1)COEFFICIENT OF THERMAL EXPANSION:
  • Paraffin:350*10 to the power -6 degree celsius
  • Type 1 wax 25-37 degree celsius -maximum
  • permissible linear change is 0.6%
  • Cooling 37-25 degree celsius -permisible contraction 0.35%
2)FLOW:

  • Minimal flow -permit wax carving/pattern,permit easy removal
3)RESIDUAL STRESS:
  • Reason for distortion
  • Wax has to be handled at high temperature
  • Sooner wax pattern invested minimal residual stress
