                                 BLEEDING GUMS 

  • Bleeding gums is one of the most common condition affecting oral cavity 
  • It indicates slowly progressive disease of gum which may further involving :bone supporting teeth ,ultimately resulting in tooth loss
  • Bleeding gums can be spontaneous or due to provocation 

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS 

  • Gums-soft ,spongy, swollen
  • While brushing bleeding occur
  • Bleeding can be associated with or without pain.
  • If pain present then usually dull in nature
  • You might experience bad odor from mouth 







CAUSES :

LOCAL CAUSES:

  1. Calculus
  2. Gingival trauma
  3. Recession 
  4. Overhang
  5. Abnormal frenum
  6. Frenum pull
  7. Developmental abnormality 

SYSTEMIC CAUSES:

  1. Hemorrhage
  2. Platelet disorder
  3. Vitamin k deficiencies







TREATMENT:

  • Applying pressure :apply pressure with gauze pack ,soaked in ice water and directly apply to gums
  • Local application of astringents can control /reduce bleeding 

Some common astringents :

Tannic acid

Aluminium salt 

Zinc salt

Ferric chloride

Silver nitrate

Local styptics :adrenaline, gelatin ,EACA

But long lasting results can be obtained by only treating the cause

  • MAINTAIN proper dental hygiene :

Poor oral hygiene induces inflammation ,removal of source of bacteria to improve the condition proper maintenance is must

  • Vitamin supplements:

vitamin deficiency -supplement such as vitamin c

sore and bleeding gums can be aggravated by citric food and juice 

  • Spicy food
  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco
Denture problems -replace with new denture or wear only during meals

  • Brush teeth gently after every meal
  • Rinse with salt water










CARE:

  • Use of soft tooth brush

  • Use of interdental aids
  • Rinse with salt water ,avoid mouth rinse that contains alcohol to prevent dry mouth
  • Stay away from smoking
  • Visit dentist regularly
  • Medical cause -refer to physician for opinion
